Dispelling the myths about erectile dysfunction and impotence
There may be some stories you've heard about erection problems which will make you feel more worried than you need be. Here are some of the more common ones - and the reasons they're not true.
"It's all in the mind"
This is an old belief. Erection problems are a common medical condition and in a lot of cases are related to other causes like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or occur as a side effect of certain medicines. It's true however, that occasionally erection problems can be caused by stress or anxiety.
"At my age I shouldn't be bothered with sex any more"
Expressing love physically is something that is completely natural no matter what your age. And if you have a loving partner there is no reason to deny yourself this pleasurable aspect of your life just because you have an erection problem.
"Once you have a problem getting erections nothing can be done about it"
This couldn't be further from the truth, and there's no reason why you should accept a problem with your erection. It's a condition that is now medically treatable. Millions of men who have shared your experience have visited the doctor and successfully reclaimed their love lives and have got back to their personal best.
"This is an old man's problem"
Wrong. In fact, erection problems can affect men of any age. So this should not stop you discussing treatment options with your doctor, whatever your age.
"Another medical condition is causing it, so there's no hope"
Untrue again. Common medical causes of erection problems such as diabetes and heart problems do not prevent you from being successfully treated. But you'll need to work with your doctor to find the right treatment.
"I'll just be wasting my doctor's time"
Erection problems are now widely recognised by medical professionals. As many as 1 in 10 men experience them, so it is probable that your doctor will have already treated many men successfully for this condition. You deserve a better love life, and that's got to be worth the time.
